History

The Postal Department and the Telegraph Department were two separate Departments until 1960. But on 25th January 1960, these two departments were combined into the Posts and Telegraph Department, this department was later divided into regulatory body PTD and the enterprise and the Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, (now Myanma Post and Telecommunication(MPT) under the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs(MCPT).

Set-Up

Posts and Telecommunications Department became the Grade II Department on 11th February, 1999, with a total strength of 16 officers and 61 staffs .

Duties and Responsibilities

To carry out these duties, the following four divisions have been created within Posts and Telecommunications department

  -Admin Division
  -Line Division
  -Postal Division
  -Radio Division

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities of PTD are as follows:

(a) Supervising the operations of radio communication, telephone, telegraph and post in keeping with rules and regulations.
(b) Coordinating and cooperating with international organizations such as ITU, UPU, APT, and APPU
(c) Issuing Wireless Station Licence and collecting fees.
(d) Issuing Radio Licences and collecting fees.
(e) Issuing TV and Video Licences and collecting fees.
(f) Issuing Satellite Receiver Licences and collecting fees
(g) Issuing licence for establishment of Wide Area Network (WAN) and providing services.
(h) Issuing International Radio Operator Certificates.
(i) Prescribing radio frequency and supervising its usage.
(j) Studying modern telecommunications technology and advising the respective authorities
(k) Controlling Telecommunications equipment.
